Behind every data model, dashboard, or machine learning breakthrough is a person with a journey, and in the case of AWiDS (African Women in Data Science), those journeys are powerful, inspiring, and deeply transformative.
This post is a celebration of African women who have carved out space in the data science world against the odds. Through their stories, we hope to inspire, empower, and remind every reader that you belong here too.
"I joined AWiDS while juggling a full-time job in public health. I had zero coding experience, but the mentorship and bootcamps changed everything. Today, I work as a junior data scientist using machine learning to track disease outbreaks across West Africa. My proudest moment? Leading a team of women in a Zindi competition and placing in the top 10!"
Key Insight: You don’t need a tech background to thrive, just the right support system and a willingness to learn.
"I spent over a decade as a teacher before I found AWiDS. I was terrified of starting over, especially with kids to support. But with community projects, study groups, and guidance from other African women who’d done it too, I made the leap. Now, I’m an education data analyst, and I’ve never felt more fulfilled."
Key Insight: It’s never too late to start over. Community can be your greatest motivation.
"I always wanted to use tech to drive change in my community. AWiDS helped me build not just technical skills, but confidence. Through one of their programs, I worked on a project analyzing gender disparities in education. That project led to a research internship—and today, I’m leading my own data-driven nonprofit initiative."
Key Insight: When you align your values with your work, data becomes a tool for real impact.
Each of these journeys is unique—but they share a common thread: access, community, and empowerment. AWiDS isn’t just about teaching data skills. It’s about building a network where African women support one another to grow, take risks, and lead.
We’re always looking to highlight more voices from our community. If you’re an African woman in data science with a journey to share—big or small—we’d love to hear from you.
