Our journey into data science didn’t start in the most obvious way. One of us came from the medical field, the other from education. As friends, we often found ourselves drawn to conversations about data, and over time, we realized we shared a deep passion for it. With that spark, we boldly decided to transition into the data space. But the path wasn’t easy. We had no support, no roadmap, and very few people who looked like us in the spaces we were trying to enter. It was isolating, overwhelming, and full of uncertainty. Still, we pushed through, learning, growing, and slowly finding our place.
Along the way, we met so many African women who shared similar stories. Women who were eager to enter the data field but felt out of place, lost, or unsure of how to begin. Women who were looking for guidance, sisterhood, and a community that truly understands their journey. That’s when the idea was born. We created African Women in Data Science to be the community we once needed — a safe, empowering space where African women across the globe can connect, grow, and thrive in the world of data. This is more than just a network; it's a movement. And we’re just getting started.
